Run Across Georgia
Run Dates and Route
April 24, 2010: Eufaula, Alabama to the beaches of Jekyll Island, Georgia.
Run Across Georgia | A Cultural Experience
Run Across Georgia is currently designed to be a 250+ mile, multi-day running journey beginning at the Georgia state line, and completing on the beach at Jekyll Island on the Georgia Coast.
As background, since I started ultrarunning in June of 2006, I have always been enamored with the idea of running across the country. Start somewhere on the east coast, run like a fool, and finish somewhere on the west coast.
Then, I read Walk Across America, by Peter Jenkins, and decided that, yep, someday I am going to set off on this personal journey for myself.
The run is designed to give aspiring trans-USA runners a taste of the action, and significant practice with regards to planning and managing a multi-day crossing of any kind.
Is this a race?
Run Across Georgia is designed specifically to be whatever the runner wants it to be, and can make of it.
But RAG will be a little different – recognized runners must commit to:
- No crew aid
- No motels
Runners will start at the Alabama/Georgia state line with whatever necessary to get them to the next store or road-side fruit stand. During the night, if runners feel the need to get some rest, they can do so somewhere along the course be it a church property, park or anywhere else where it appears to most likely be a safe option.
That being said, all finishers, that register with me, will receive a special finishers award as a token of their experience; and while that’s cool, it will pale in comparison to the movie in your head that will most certainly stay with you for a lifetime.
I will charge no fees.
I will have very limited rule set.
This run is about the experience. It’s about learning and growing as a runner, and being part of the daily world, for however long necessary, unlike you’ve ever been before.
And, if you’re anything like me, and this has caught your interest, I don’t really need to me say any of that.
You already know.
